Our Legacy

Over a Century of Progress

When you join FPT, you become part of a company that doesn’t just adapt to change—it defines it, shaped by a century of progress and poised for continued growth.

Ferrous Processing & Trading (FPT) is built on more than a century of innovation, resilience, and leadership in the metal recycling industry. Its roots trace back to 1904, with the founding of Zalev Brothers in Sarnia, Ontario—a modest operation focused on recycling rags, paper, and metals. Over the decades, the company transformed into Canada’s largest integrated scrap processing operation, pioneering industry milestones like the first powered guillotine shear in 1933 and early briquetting technology in the 1960s. In 1986, FPT advanced its reputation for innovation by installing the world’s first Super Heavy Duty Shredder, improving both product quality and scrap sourcing. A year later, Zalev Brothers became the first Canadian company to receive Ford’s prestigious Q-1 Award for full-service scrap supply. The 1998 acquisition of Zalev Brothers and SLC Recycling Industries solidified FPT’s position as the leading recycler of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in Michigan and southwestern Ontario. Today, FPT’s long-standing legacy not only reflects its deep industry expertise but also creates a unique opportunity for those seeking meaningful, future-focused work.
